Gary Shaw

Gary Shaw

Board Member

Gary Shaw has held positions on numerous boards of numerous charitable, cultural and educational organizations which include The Foundry Art Centre and Lindenwood University. Among his numerous accolades and accomplishments, Gary has spent over 40 years volunteering his time and energy to Missouri KIDS and has served as President of our Board of Directors for the last 25 years.

Gary’s countless hours of devotion, love and support for the recipients of Missouri KIDS are astounding.  He truly cares what happens to these kids and their families and has been instrumental in helping our recipients realize that there is life after a tragedy.

Gary understands the needs of our recipients so well because his son was the second student athlete to ever receive help from Missouri KIDS. That experience is what has made Gary so determined to make our recipients lives easier by providing them with the specialized equipment that they need.

Missouri KIDS would not be what it is today without Gary; he has been our biggest champion, fundraiser, cheerleader, and our favorite auctioneer since the day that he joined the board in 1977.

He has completed the Gobi Desert March (155 mile foot race), the Antarctica Marathon (first of 82) and served as an Olympic torch-bearer.

Patrick has been featured in countless newspapers, including the New York Times, USA Today, LA Times, Popular Mechanics, Sports Illustrated, Southwest Airline’s Spirit Magazine, Discover Channel, Ripley’s Believe It or Not and the Washington Post to name just a few; his story has made the news on national and international television, and his story has been told in magazines all over the world.

Patrick, is the first fully functional SCI quadriplegic in medical history, his story is that of a miracle, and the media knows it. To paraphrase, the legendary Sam Schmidt, Indy 500 race car driver and team owner, Patrick Rummerfield has never met a challenge he didn’t like!

Patrick was paralyzed Sep 20, 1974 at the age 21 in a high-speed (135 MPH) car accident and given less than 72 hours to live. Through sheer determination and the desire to accomplish his childhood dream of racing, he moved his big toe. After seventeen years of intensive rehabilitation he walks today with over 85% of his spinal cord destroyed in his neck at C-4.

Seventeen years of intense physical therapy, of falling down and getting up, scabby elbows and knees on the way to recovery gives a man time to dream greater dreams. Like becoming the first fully functional spinal cord injury quadriplegic to participate in Motor Sports. This will be an historical event and one that will capture the hearts of many.

Seventeen years of exhaustive rehabilitation has resulted in many world records & firsts, 43 to-date!

With uncommon courage, conviction of spirit and genuine humility, Rummerfield has proven himself to be a legend in his own right. He is the world’s first fully-functional spinal cord injury (SCI) quadriplegic to obtain a NHRA competition license, the holder of the FIA World Land Speed Record for electric vehicles (245.5 mph), an IronMan tri-athlete and one of only 82 people in the world to run the Antarctica Marathon. Recipient of the 2000 ESPN’s Arete Amateur Athlete of The Year Award, the United States Marines Corps “Lead By Example” Medallion, Landstuhl 435th MDS Command Coin of “Excellence”, “Public Affairs” Medallion awarded by the Chief of Public Affairs, Office of the Secretary Of The Army. Patrick was the first to receive the coveted Henry Viscardi Leadership award.

Patrick has also received the distinguished Human Spirit Award at the 2000 Christopher Reeve/Gateway To a Cure Awards Ceremonies. Patrick was honored by throwing out the first pitch at a Chicago Cubs baseball game. Patrick is also a lifelong member of the 200 MPH Club.
